ADAMS, Mass. — The town has hired Crystal Wojcik as town accountant/finance director to replace longtime accountant Mary Beverly who is retiring.

“She is a remarkable young woman and thoroughly impressed her interview panel,” Town Administrator Jay Green said. “In addition to the benefit of recruiting a younger generation into local government,  she is ready to take on this critical position and capable of it. She will represent the town well and will introduce a contagious energy in the role.”

Beverly plans to retire at the end of the month.

“Mary Beverly has been a cornerstone – if not the foundation – for local government finance in Northern Berkshire for many years,” Green said. “The fiscal policies and controls she helped develop and her budget acumen have made  Adams a very stable community. Her retirement is well earned.”

Wojcik, a Hoosac Valley High graduate, has been working for the town as a financial assistant. She is currently attending Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts where she will earn a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting and dual minors in leadership and economics this May.

“She possesses a solid understanding of general accounting principles, concepts and how economics affect municipal finance,” Green said. “She is familiar with our accounting system, internal processes, our new time and attendance system, procurement and other functions that she has been exposed to while in the employ of the town.”

Wojcik made a cameo during Wednesday night’s budget subcommittee. That night, Green said he asked her to sit in to get a better sense of the budget process.

Green said Wojcik has been working with Beverly to ease the transition. He said Beverly will stay on in a part-time capacity and continue to work alongside Wojcik.

Green added that Wojcik has big shoes to fill.

“[Beverly] has been a go-to person for municipal finance and we have worked together closely over my past two years and had occasionally consulted during my time as administrative officer in North Adams,” Green said. “She will be missed by all of us.”

The Selectmen will ratify the hiring of Wojcik at their its regular meeting.
